Refiloe Maele Phoolo (born 16 December 1990), professionally known as Cassper Nyovest, is a South African rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur, record producer, and amateur boxer. He is known for his debut studio album Tsholofelo (2014) and for establishing the record label Family Tree Records.
Early Life
Cassper Nyovest born in Mafikeng, North West, South Africa is the son of Muzuki and Letsebela Phoolo. He has a sister named Tsholofelo and a late brother, Khotso, who passed away in 2003. Nyovest attended Sol Plaatjie Secondary School, where he participated in sports and started rapping at age 12. He failed his Grade 10 exams in 2006, moved to Potchefstroom to live with his grandmother, and dropped out of high school in 2007 to pursue a music career.
Career
Cassper Nyovest began his music career in 2004 with the group Childhood Gangsta and later joined Slow Motion. He signed with Impact Sounds but became an independent artist in 2008 and founded Family Tree Records in 2014.
His debut single, "Gusheshe" (featuring Okmalumkoolkat), was released in 2013. In 2014, he released his debut album Tsholofelo, which reached number one on the iTunes South Africa albums chart. He initiated the "Fill Up" concert series with Fill Up The Dome (2015) and continued with Fill Up Orlando Stadium (2016), FNB Stadium (2017), Moses Mabhida Stadium (2018), and Royal Bafokeng Stadium (2019).
His second album, Refiloe (2015), included collaborations with The Game and DJ Drama. His third album, Thuto (2017), was certified gold on release day and platinum shortly after. His fourth album, Sweet and Short (2019), focused on Kwaito. Any Minute Now (2020) won three South African Hip Hop Awards. His fifth studio album, Sweet And Short 2.0 (2021), featured Amapiano music.
Personal Life
Cassper Nyovest was previously in a relationship with actress Boity Thulo. He has also been involved in business ventures, including endorsements with Ciroc and MTN, founding the sneaker company Root of Fame, and launching the liquor brand Billiato. He has participated in amateur boxing matches, including "Fame vs Clout" (2021) and "Actor vs Musician" (2022).
